I was born in Indianapolis, IN on December 9th, 1987, making me 20 years of age right now. I grew up on the Northwest side, attending St. Monica Catholic School for elementary and middle school, then later attending Pike High School, which was a brief walk from my house. In high school I was heavily involved in music, eventually becoming drum major of the marching band, first chair euphonium player in wind ensemble, and the pianist for the jazz band. I also took every AP class that interested me. After graduating in 2006, I spent a season touring Europe and the US with the Glassmen, a drum & bugle corps from Toledo, OH. That fall I began my career at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, where I am now a sophomore majoring in mechanical engineering. Rose-Hulman is located in Terre Haute, IN and has received wide acclaim as one of the best undergraduate-centered engineering schools in the country. Since beginning college, I have marched another season of drum corps and have become heavily involved with the music programs at Rose.
As you may probably have surmised from the content of my homepage, my primary hobby is the design of roller coasters. I have officially been a roller coaster enthusiast since I purchased Chris Sawyer’s Roller Coaster Tycoon in middle school. I then naturally began to focus solely on the custom ride element, making sketches of my own roller coasters and eventually buying the NoLimits Simulation seen in use throughout this site. As a rider, I prefer wooden coasters and historic rides to the newer steel creations, which often lack the same kind of character or that out-of-control feeling. I now feel as though roller coasters are a hobby I will never tire of.
When not imagining, designing, or building model rides, you may often find me playing music, reading, or playing intramural athletics. I love jazz and drum corps equally, despite their obvious differences. I play piano and euphonium, but now I am beginning to take some formal music theory courses in the hope of arranging and composing my own music. Rumor has it a music minor will be available at Rose-Hulman shortly; if that is true then I will certainly pursue that degree. When reading, I typically prefer comedy, war fiction, and scientific nonfiction to most of the “high literature,” but I do enjoy the occasional classic novel. When it comes to athletics, I like to play soccer, volleyball, basketball, ultimate, and run. I tend to get into great shape over the summers and lose it soon into the school year as my focus turns to homework.
Though most of my time is spent on school and the hobbies listed above, I also learn many new things while surfing the internet. I would recommend StumbleUpon if you haven’t heard of it yet, as well as the site TED.com for a lot of very interesting material. I am not particularly fond of internet networking or communities, but I do participate a bit, mostly for the sake of sharing my ideas and designs.
