Just short of a month after being in a serious car accident that left the football and classroom standout comatose, Drew Christy has made encouraging progress on his road to recovery. While the sophomore biomedical engineering major remains in a coma, he has recently been responding to stimulations to his senses. On March 12, the family’s online journal exclaims, “Today when we finished brushing his teeth, we asked him to stick out his tongue. After a delay he did!!! I’ve never been so happy to see my son stick out his tongue.” It goes on to say that he has responded to some other commands and other smells over the past week.

I’ve never been so happy to see my son stick out his tongue.

Furthermore, Christy has moved from Methodist Hospital to St. Vincent Seton Hospital in Indianapolis to, “Begin physical and occupational therapy this week to help build his muscles from the long rest and to assist with the coma stimulation,” the journal states.

Currently, Christy’s temperature has been fluctuating less and peaking lower, despite fighting off three infections. He is now off a ventilator, breathing on his own. It was also recently discovered that his left arm was fractured in the same location as a football injury he sustained last fall.

Many times through the journal, the family expresses their gratitude for the out-pouring support from everyone. “He remains in a coma, but we’re hopeful that he may wake up soon.”
