Campus Crime: Car Breakins

The morning of Saturday, March 15 marked the discovery of several shocking car break-ins in the Apartment-Style Residence Hall parking lot.

The break-ins all are believed to have occurred at the same time on Saturday morning. Each of the break-ins were similar in procedure; they each began with the shattering of a car window. The thief then burglarized the cars’ interiors, taking stereos, tools, compact discs, a radar detector, and several phone chargers.

Along with the normal damages incurred from a car break-in, many of the cars also suffered from dashboard damage from where the thief had attempted to take several components, and sometimes failed.

The current case is under file and attempts are being made to track down the thief. All thefts were immediately reported to the Office of Public Safety, who in turn, reported all of these incidents to the Terre Haute City Police Department, who will attempt to research and find the culprit behind these crimes.

Currently, students should do what they can to help prevent any further break-ins. Precautionary measures include the removal of faceplates from car stereo systems, the personal valuables, and all other precautions that may deter a potential thief from breaking in.

If you have any information relating to the cases, please contact the Office of Public Safety at extension 8590.
