TERRE HAUTE, IN -- The Rose-Hulman women's tennis squad moved into first place in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings with an 8-0 win over Manchester and a 7-2 victory over Anderson on Saturday.

The Engineers claimed their first ever victory over Manchester, the league champions for four of the last five years.

The Engineers got wins at No. 1 singles from senior Sam Danesis (Akron, Ohio/Revere) who defeated Alex Hammer 6-1, 6-0, and at No. 2  singles from freshmen Kelsey Sackett (Kalamazoo, Mi./Mattawan) who earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Jessie Rigby.

At No. 3 singles, freshmen Melissa Montgomery (Alexandria, IN/Monroe) beat Becky Curtis 6-3, 6-1 while junior Megan Chann  (Columbia, Mo/Rock Bridge) defeated Katy Porter 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.  Sophomore Klara Schroederus (Glenview, Ill/Glenbrook South) got past Nicole Newell 6-1, 6-0 in No. 6 singles.

The team of Danesis and Montgomery also earned a victory at No. 1 doubles for the Engineers defeating the team of Hammer and Rigby by a mark of 8-1. Chan and Sackett partnered to defeat Curtis and Porter 8-5 in No. 2 doubles.

Against Manchester, five players recorded victories at singles and doubles.  Danesis earned a sweep at the No. 1 positions, with Sackett duplicating the feat at the No. 2 spot.  Chann, Schroederus and Norris also won in both disciplines.

Rose-Hulman stands 2-0 on the season and returns to action next Saturday at Defiance College.
