Rose-Hulman Women's Tennis Tops Hanover, Falls to Bellarmine; Engineers Improve HCAC Position

Kristin Wilson recorded the deciding victory at No. 6 singles against Hanover.

HANOVER, IND. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's tennis team earned a key 5-4 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory over Hanover College and fell to Bellarmine University 7-2 on Sunday.

With the Hanover win, Rose-Hulman improves to 6-1 in HCAC play with one match remaining at Franklin.  The winner of the Franklin vs. Rose-Hulman match will likely earn the No. 2 seed in the upcoming league tournament.

Rose-Hulman relied on a pair of singles wins and two doubles victories to record a 4-4 score against Hanover.  The deciding match featured a two-set victory by Engineer sophomore Kristin Wilson (Lake Zurich, Ill.) with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Aly Ernstberger at the No. 6 singles position.

Previous Rose-Hulman winners against Hanover included freshman Sam Danesis (Akron, Ohio/Revere) with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles; sophomore Betsy Marschand (Galveston/Lewis Cass) with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles; the doubles team of Danesis and freshman Julie Hopkins (Terre Haute/Northview/ Saddlebrook Acad.) by an 8-3 margin at No. 1 doubles; and the team of Wilson and sophomore Maritza Gonzalez (Vancouver, Wash./Mountain View) at No. 3 doubles with a 9-7 win.

Bellarmine recorded a perfect 5-0 record in tiebreakers to earn a tightly contested 7-2 win over Rose-Hulman in non-conference action earlier Sunday.  Hopkins and Danesis earned an 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles, while Gonzalez and Wilson combined for an 8-5 victory at No. 3 doubles.

Rose-Hulman stands 7-3 overall on the season and hosts Oakland City University on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the Joy Hulbert Tennis Center.
