HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology relied on a
strong defensive effort to keep Transylvania University off the
scoreboard, but the Pioneers scored in the final five minutes to
earn a 1-0 win in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference
women's soccer semifinals on Wednesday.
Sophomore
Julie Brennan (Indianapolis/Pike) recorded 11 saves, her second
most this season, to keep Rose-Hulman within striking distance.
Transylvania finally broke the scoreless tie in the 86th minute on a
midfield dribble by Kari Dailey led to her second goal of the season
on an assist from Haydon Warren.
Rose-Hulman
had one final chance to knot the score and force overtime.
Junior Annmarie Stanley (Warrenville, Ill./ Rosary) booted a
strong corner kick into the box that was headed toward the goal and
past the goalkeeper by junior Eli Baca (Santa Fe, N.M.), but
a Pioneer defender saved the score and booted the ball out of the
box for a team save.
Baca and
junior Ame Turner (Evansville, Ind./North) recorded shots for
the Engineers, who were outshot 17-2 by a balanced Transylvania
attack.
Transylvania improved to 12-6-2 on the season and travels to Hanover
College for the title match on Saturday. Rose-Hulman earned
its second regular season championship in the last three years with
a 7-1 conference mark and compiled an 8-10 overall record.
