CINCINNATI, OHIO --
The College of Mount St. Joseph relied on a strong defensive
effort to hold off a second half Rose-Hulman Institute of
Technology rally and earn a 47-42 women's basketball victory
on Wednesday night.
Kat O'Neill led the
Lions offense with 13 points for an attack that shot 34%
from the field in the victory.
For Rose-Hulman,
freshman Donna Marsh (Mobile, Ala./Baker) paced the
offensive attack with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Junior
Liz Ridgway (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Northwestern U.) added
seven points and three rebounds.
Mount St. Joseph held
the Engineers to 30% from the field to gain a nine-point
lead at halftime. The Lions pushed the lead to 13 points
early in the second half, before the Engineers rallied to
within three points at 40-37 with 8:38 left.
The defenses took
charge down the stretch, with Mount St. Joseph gaining a
seven-point lead at 44-37 with 4:25 left. Three straight
points from Marsh made the score 44-40 with 2:11 remaining.
Rose-Hulman closed to
within three at 44-41 with 33 seconds left on a free throw
by senior Jill Floyd (Bloomington, Ill./Olympia), but
Mount St. Joseph hit three free throws in the final seconds
to secure the win.
Mount St. Joseph
improved to 6-14 overall and 5-7 in conference play, while
Rose-Hulman dropped to 10-11 and 6-6 in league games. The
Engineers host Defiance College in the Think Pink for Breast
Cancer Awareness Game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
