TERRE HAUTE, IND. --
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology relied on a balanced scoring
attack to hold off a late Hanover College rally and earn a 52-51
women's basketball victory on Saturday.
Lacey Hornaday missed a
running shot in the lane as time expired as the Engineers improved
to 2-2 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.
Junior Liz Ridgway
(Grosse Pointe, Mich./Northwestern U.), sophomore Shayna
Banet (Canton, Ga./ Woodstock) and senior Jill Floyd
(Bloomington, Ill./Olympia) each scored 11 points to pace the
Engineer attack.
Ridgway added 11 rebounds
and two assists for her second career double-double. Banet
pitched in with seven rebounds and two steals, while Floyd had three
assists.
Other key contributors for
Rose-Hulman included senior Katie Tharp (Linton) with nine
points and five rebounds; and senior Brittany Moline
(Indianapolis/Perry Meridian) with seven points, five rebounds
and four assists.
Molly Martin led Hanover
with 17 points and nine rebounds, while Micah Whitted added 16
points, five assists and five steals to lead the Panthers offense.
With the score tied at
49-49, Banet buried two free throws with 35 seconds left to give the
Engineers a two-point edge. Rachel Walters answered with a
layup at the 17-second mark to tie the score for the second time on
the day at 51-51.
The Engineers pounded the
ball inside to Ridgway on the next possession, who was fouled by
Martin with 10.4 seconds left. Ridgway missed the first free
throw but buried the second to give Rose-Hulman the 52-51 lead and
set the stage for the final drive to the basket.
Rose-Hulman held Hanover to
just 29% shooting in the game, including 17% in the first half, with
a strong team defensive effort. The Engineers also
outrebounded a Hanover squad that entered the game with a 20.7
rebound per game advantage by a 42-32 mark.
Rose-Hulman stands 2-2
overall and 1-0 in league play, while Hanover dropped to 2-2 and 0-1
in HCAC games. The Engineers host Franklin College on
Wednesday at 7:30.
