TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Tri-State
University held Rose-Hulman Institute of Techology to 30% from the
field to earn a 72-52 victory in the women's basketball season
opener for both teams on Friday night at Hulbert Arena.
Julie Swisher led four
Tri-State players in double figures with 14 points on 5-9 from the
field. Sarah Howe added 13, Rachel Grove 12 and Kelly Rogers scored
10 points for the Thunder.
Rose-Hulman placed a pair of
players in double figures to lead the effort. Senior Jill Floyd
(Bloomington, Ill./Olympia) scored 13 points and tied for
game-high honors with three steals. Freshman Donna Marsh
(Mobile, Ala./Baker) recorded a double-double with 12 points and
11 rebounds off the bench for the Engineers.
Other key contributors for
Rose-Hulman included senior Katie Tharp (Linton) with six
points and three rebounds; freshman Shayna Banet (Canton,
Ga./Woodstock) with five points; and junior Liz Ridgway
(Grosse Pointe, Mich./Northwestern U.) with five points and
three boards.
Tri-State jumped out to a
35-17 halftime lead, before Rose-Hulman shot 44% from the field in
the second half in a 37-35 stanza.
Rose-Hulman returns to action
against Earlham College on Saturday at 3 p.m., while Tri-State faces
off with Franklin on Saturday at 1 in the second day of the
Rose-Hulman Classic.
