  Rose-Hulman News HCAC Title Hopes End with 61-49 Loss to Transylvania

N. MANCHESTER, IND. – Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology rallied from a 20-point second-half deficit to close within nine, but Transylvania University held on to advance to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference title game with a 61-49 victory on Friday night.

Senior Rebekah Forsyth (Farmersburg/N. Central) led the Engineer offense with 12 points and five rebounds.  Senior Suzy Carlson (State College, Pa.) added seven points on 7-8 from the free-throw line.

Junior Liz Ridgway (Grosse Pointe, Mich./ Northwestern U.) came off the bench for six points and eight rebounds.

Sophomore Julie Leach paced Transylvania with 21 points on 8-11 from the field with eight rebounds.  Jessica Gilbert had 17 points and Cindy Beaven scored 12 for the balanced Pioneers attack.

Transylvania shot 47% from the field in the second half and buried 15-17 free throws to thwart for the Rose-Hulman comeback effort.

Suzy Carlson hit 7-8 from the foul line.
With the loss, Rose-Hulman completes the regular season with a 21-5 record.  The Engineers will hold out hope of earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament when the team list is released on Sunday.

Rose-Hulman also earned the most victories in school history for the women's team, while capturing the most wins by any Engineer basketball team since the men's squad finished 24-4 in 1976-77.

Transylvania jumped out to a 33-13 advantage early in the second half, before a Rose-Hulman charge made the score 34-23 with 14:54 left on a three-pointer by junior Jill Floyd (Bloomington, Ill./Olympia)

Rose-Hulman moved within 47-37 on a free throw by Floyd, but Transylvania answered with seven straight points to take a 54-37 lead and secure their 19th win of the year.

Transylvania advances to the HCAC title game against host Manchester College on Saturday at 3 p.m.  The winner advances to the NCAA Division III Tournament with the league's automatic bid.
