  Rose-Hulman News Winning Streak Ends at Transylvania Tops Rose-Hulman 72-58

Suzy Carlson scored 14 points to lead the backcourt.

LEXINGTON, KY. – Transylvania University snapped a five-game winning streak for Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and dropped the Engineers to second in league play with a 72-58 women's basketball victory on Saturday afternoon.

Julie Leach scored 21 points and added 11 rebounds for the winners, while Jessica Gilbert and Jackie Distler each had 11 points for a balanced Transylvania offense.

Senior Rebekah Forsyth (Farmersburg/N. Central) paced Rose-Hulman with 16 points.  Senior Suzy Carlson (State College, Pa.) added 14 points and junior Jill Floyd (Bloomington, Ill./Olympia) scored 12 for the Engineers. 

Sophomore Brittany Moline (Indianapolis/Perry Meridian) added eight points, six rebounds and three steals for Rose-Hulman.

With the loss, Rose-Hulman drops to 19-3 overall and 11-2 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play.  The Engineers trail Manchester College by one-half game in the league standings and will host a pair of home games next week.

Jill Floyd scored 12 points on the day.
Transylvania shot 41% from the field in the game but hit 25-37 free throws to withstand Rose-Hulman's comeback efforts.  The Engineers were held to 33% from the field but remained within striking distance by finishing 17-22 from the foul line.

Transylvania jumped out to a 41-28 halftime lead on the hot hand of 46% shooting and five three-pointers.  The Pioneers maintained a 14-point lead at 47-33 at the 15:46 mark of the second half on four straight points from Cindy Beavin.

Rose-Hulman rallied to within eight points at 47-39 with an 6-0 run of its own.  Carlson scored on a layup and hit two free throws, then Forsyth capped the run with a layup at the 12:54 mark.

Transylvania showed its strength with a 10-2 run to gain a 59-42 lead with 9:42 left to secure the victory.  Haley Riney hit a jumper, then Distler added a three-pointer to give the Pioneers their biggest lead of the game.

Transylvania improved to 14-7 overall and 8-4 in HCAC play, while Rose-Hulman dropped to 19-3 and 11-2.  The Engineers host the College of Mount St. Joseph on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
