  Rose-Hulman News Senior Duo Leads Rose-Hulman Comeback in Win at Bluffton

Rebekah Forsyth led the Engineers with 19 points and 12 rebounds.

BLUFFTON, OHIO – Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology relied on seniors Rebekah Forsyth (Farmersburg/N. Central) and Suzy Carlson (State College, Pa.) to earn a come from behind 60-55 victory at Bluffton University on Saturday.

Forsyth scored 19 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and hit 9-10 free throws to lead the Engineer offense.  Carlson added 17 points, including a perfect 10-10 from the free-throw line, three steals, two blocks and two assists.

Sophomore Liz Ridgway (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Northwestern University) added nine points off the bench with a 4-5 effort to provide depth to the attack.

With the victory, Rose-Hulman moved to 18-2 overall and 10-1 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

Rose-Hulman overcame a nine-point halftime deficit by hitting 48% from the field and burying all 18 of its free throw attempts in the second stanza.  Bluffton outrebounded the Engineers 39-30 in the contest, but Rose-Hulman forced 25 turnovers to help earn the victory.

The balanced Bluffton offensive effort featured 13 points from Lindsay Ebbeskotte and Tanya Rickenberg, 11 from Angie Lee and 10 points from Amanda Bell.

Liz Ridgway came off the bench with nine key points for Rose-Hulman.
Rose-Hulman jumped out to a 10-2 lead by holding Bluffton to just one field goal over the first 10 minutes.  Ridgway scored the first five Engineer points, Carlson swished a three-pointer and Forsyth added a layup in the spurt.

After the Engineers held Bluffton without a point for nearly nine minutes, the Beavers went on a 11-3 run to knot the score at 13-13 on two free throws by Ebbeskotte

Bluffton then turned up the defense, holding Rose-Hulman to just two points over the last 7:09 of the first half to take a 24-15 lead at the break.

In the second half, Bluffton maintained a 35-28 lead with 12:57 left on a three-point play by Rickenberg.  Rose-Hulman rallied to within one point at 37-36 on a layup by junior Katie Tharp (Linton) and at 40-39 on a three-pointer by junior Jill Floyd (Bloomington, Ill./Olympia).

Bluffton answered the challenge to gain another seven-point lead at 47-40, but four straight free throws by Carlson and layups by Ridgway and Forsyth brought the Engineers within 49-47.

Junior Candace Procter (Southfield, Mich./Groves) gave Rose-Hulman its first lead at 50-49 on a three-pointer with 4:23 left, but the Beavers again earned a three-point lead at 53-50.  Four free throws and a layup by Forsyth down the stretch helped the Engineers secure the victory.

Rose-Hulman improved to 18-2 overall and stands 10-1 in conference play, while Bluffton dropped to 5-14 and 3-7 in league games.  The Engineers return to action on Wednesday with a home matchup against Franklin College.
