School Record Winning Streak Reaches 10 in 71-65 Victory Over Transylvania
TERRE HAUTE, IND. – Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology extended its school record winning streak to 10 games and improved to 13-1 on the season with a 71-65 women's basketball victory over Transylvania University on Saturday. With the victory, the Engineers also moved to 6-0 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play and won their seventh consecutive home game at Hulbert Arena. Senior Rebekah Forsyth (Farmersburg/N. Central) paced the attack with 30 points and 13 rebounds. She finished 10-16 from the field and 9-9 from the free-throw line in an effort that marked her school record eighth career 30-point game. Sophomore Liz Ridgway (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Northwestern U.) came off the bench to provide 13 points and six rebounds in the second-highest scoring game of her career. Ridgway finished 5-7 from the field and 3-4 from the charity stripe.
Senior Suzy Carlson (State College, Pa.) added nine points, junior Candace Procter (Southfield, Mich./Groves) contributed six points and four assists, while junior Brittany Moline (Indianapolis/Perry Meridian) tallied a career-best seven assists for the Engineers. Transylvania was led by sophomore Julie Leach with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Cindy Beavin added a well rounded effort of 12 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Transylvania jumped out to a 32-28 halftime advantage on the strength of its 10-14 effort from the foul line. In the second half, Rose-Hulman scored the first five points to take a 33-32 lead on a layup by Forsyth with 18:51 left. The score would remain within four points until a three-pointer by Forsyth gave the Engineers a 49-45 edge and sparked a 9-0 run. Ridgway scored three consecutive field goals to cap the spurt and Rose-Hulman led 55-45 with 8:48 left. Transylvania would answer the challenge to move within 61-60 on a three-pointer by Brittany Henderlight with 4:19 remaining. Katie Shuffett would later tie the score at 63-63 on a field goal with 2:46 left.
The Engineers held Transylvania to just two points in the last 2:46 and relied on a three-point play by Carlson, two free throws by Forsyth and two free throws by Carlson for the final margin of victory. Rose-Hulman stands 13-1 overall and returns to action at Mount St. Joseph on Wednesday. Transylvania dropped to 9-5 overall and 3-2 in conference play. | ||||||
