Carlson Offense Leads Rose-Hulman to 12-1 and 5-0 in HCAC with 54-51 Win at Defiance

Suzy Carlson scored 27 of Rose-Hulman's 54 points in the key road win at Defiance.

DEFIANCE, OHIO – Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology improved to 12-1 on the women's basketball season and extended its school record winning streak to nine in a 54-51 win over Defiance College on Wednesday.

Senior Suzy Carlson (State College, Pa.) paced the Engineers with 27 of the team's 54 points.  She finished 6-8 from the field and 13-14 from the free throw line as the Engineers improved to 5-0 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

Other key contributors to the Engineer attack included junior Katie Tharp (Linton)with eight points and four rebounds; junior Brittany Moline (Indianapolis/Perry Meridian) with a career-high five points; and junior Rebekah Forsyth (Farmersburg/N. Central) with 10 rebounds and four points.

Defiance rallied from a 10-point second-half deficit to close within 54-51 with 26 seconds remaining and gained possession after two free throws by Carlson.  The Engineer defense forced the Yellow Jackets into a rushed two-point field goal in the waning seconds, which Kayla Mengerink missed and Forsyth rebounded at the buzzer.

Rose-Hulman shot 50% from the field in the second half and hit 12-14 free throw attempts to secure the victory.  The Engineers held Defiance to just 22% from the field in the opening 20 minutes and outrebounded the Yellow Jackets 34-31.

The Engineers relied on a 19-10 run to open the second half to gain a second half lead of 41-30.  Defiance chipped away at the lead to move within one point, but Carlson hit four key free throws in the final two minutes for Rose-Hulman's critical last four points.

Rose-Hulman maintains its HCAC lead at 5-0 overall and improved to 12-1, while Defiance dropped to 9-5 overall and 2-3 in conference play.  The Engineers host Transylvania University on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Hulbert Arena in another league game.
