Winning Streak Reaches School Record Six Games, Engineers Stand 9-1 After 67-51 Victory Over Earlham
TERRE HAUTE, IND. – Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology extended its winning streak to a women's basketball school record six games and improved to 9-1 on the season with a 67-51 win over Earlham College on Friday night at Hulbert Arena. Senior Suzy Carlson (State College, Pa.) paced four starters in double figures with 25 points. Carlson added game-highs of five assists and two steals and finished 10-11 from the free throw line in the effort. Other Engineers in double figures included senior Rebekah Forsyth (Farmersburg/N. Central) with 14 points and six rebounds; junior Katie Tharp (Linton) with 10 points and six rebounds; and junior Jill Floyd (Bloomington, Ill./Olympia) with 10 points and a perfect 6-6 from the foul line. Rose-Hulman held Earlham to 43% from the field in the game and 26% in the first half to earn its ninth win in 10 tries this season. Starr Gary led Earlham with nine points, with Samantha Lurie and Tasha Merrill each contributing eight for the Quakers.
Other key contributors for the Engineers included junior Liz Ridgway (Grosse Pointe, Mich./ Northwestern U.) with five points and seven rebounds; and junior Brittany Moline (Indianapolis/Perry Meridian) with two points, three rebounds and one steal. The Engineers jumped out to a 37-21 halftime lead on the strength of 15-18 from the free-throw line and 48% shooting from the field. Rose-Hulman held a five-point lead at 10-5, before Earlham rallied to tie the score at 14-14 on a jumper by Merrill with 9:44 left in the first half. Rose-Hulman answered with the next 11 points to take a double-figure lead that they would retain for the rest of the game. Carlson scored six points in the rally, Forsyth added four and junior Candace Procter (Southfield, Mich./Groves) contributed a free throw. In the second half, Earlham closed to within 12 points on two occasions but could not overcome the balanced Engineer attack that finished 24-29 from the free throw line.
With the victory, the 9-1 Engineers advance to the championship game of the 2006 Rose-Hulman Women's Basketball Invitational against Marian College (Ind.) on Sunday at 3 p.m. Earlham and Marian will square off on Saturday afternoon at Hulbert Arena with a 1 p.m. start. | ||||||
