Fast Start Leads Rose-Hulman Past St. Elizabeth;
Engineers Improve to 4-1

Box Score

Jill Floyd earned a spot on the all-tournament team with another double figure scoring performance.

GREENCASTLE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology continued its best start to a season in women's basketball history with a 66-36 victory over the College of St. Elizabeth on Sunday at the DePauw Tournament.

The Engineers stand 4-1 after five games for the first time in school history.  Rose-Hulman captured third-place honors in the DePauw Tournament with the victory.

Senior Katie Hamstra (Indianapolis/Park Tudor) led the scoring attack with 14 points.  Junior Jill Floyd (Bloomington, Ill./Olympia) also reached double figures with 11 points and earned a spot on the all-tournament squad for her efforts.

Other contributors to the balanced scoring effort included senior Suzy Carlson (State College, Pa.) with eight points and four assists; junior Katie Tharp (Linton) with eight points; and senior Rebekah Forsyth (Farmersburg/N. Central) with six points, five assists and four rebounds.

Katie Hamstra paced the Engineers with 14 points and added five rebounds.

The Engineers also relied on a pair of freshman post players to earn a 49-22 rebounding advantage.  Freshman Shayna Banet (Canton, Ga./Woodstock) had eight boards and two points, while sophomore Katrina Mader (Spencer/Cloverdale) had career-highs of three points and seven rebounds.

The Rose-Hulman defense held St. Elizabeth to just 26% from the field, tied for the fewest points allowed in a game since December 2002.

Rose-Hulman jumped out to an 18-4 advantage with hot shooting over the first five minutes of the game.  Floyd propelled the rally with 11 points, including 3-3 from three-point range.

The lead reached as many as 23 points in the first half, as the Engineers gained a 36-13 lead on a layup by Forsyth at the 3:18 mark.

The Engineers improved to 4-1 on the season and return to action on Wednesday with their first Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference game against Anderson University at Hulbert Arena.
