Rose-Hulman Improves to 3-0 Behind 30 Points from Rebekah Forsyth
LOUISVILLE, KY. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology relied on 30 points from senior Rebekah Forsyth (Farmersburg/ N. Central) to earn a 78-66 victory over Spalding University on Tuesday night.
With the victory, Rose-Hulman improved to 3-0 for the first time in the history of women's basketball at the college.
Other Engineers in double figures included sophomore Liz Ridgway (Grosse Pointe, Mich./ Northwestern U.) with a career-high 14 points, and senior Suzy Carlson (State College, Pa.) with 11 points and nine rebounds.
Forsyth, who added 13 rebounds for her 47th career double-double, crossed the 30-point mark for the sixth time in her Engineer career.
Junior Allie Graves led Spalding with 21 points and five rebounds. Sophomore Kristen Pendleton added 17 points, freshman Megan McGuire pitched in with 13, and junior Courtney Cravens had 10 points for the Pelicans.
The first half featured a tight margin, with Spalding earning its largest lead of the half at four points and Rose-Hulman gaining a five-point advantage.
With Spalding leading 34-32, junior Brittany Moline (Indianapolis/ Perry Meridian) buried a three-pointer with 1:22 left in the half to give the Engineers a 35-34 edge.
Forsyth added a layup with 31 seconds left in the opening period, before Shae Mercer scored on a layup with three seconds left to bring Spalding within 37-36 at the break.
In the second half, Rose-Hulman opened with a 12-2 run to earn an 11-point lead at 49-38 on a pair of free throws by junior Jill Floyd (Bloomington, Ill./Olympia). The lead increased to a game-high 14 points at 57-41 on a free throw by junior Katie Tharp (Linton) at the 14:08 mark.
Spalding made a late game charge to close within eight points on two occasions, but a pair of free throws by Floyd and Carlson in the final minute gave Rose-Hulman its final margin of victory.
Rose-Hulman stands 3-0 on the season and returns to action on Saturday night, when the Engineers battle Denison University in the first round of the DePauw Invitational. The Engineers square off with DePauw or St. Elizabeth on Sunday. | ||
