Box Score

Rebekah Forsyth led the way with 19 points.

FRANKLIN, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology earned a victory in the first game of the Jon Prevo coaching era by topping Earlham College 65-42 in women’s basketball action on Friday night.

Senior Rebekah Forsyth (Farmersburg/N. Central) led a balanced Engineer scoring attack with 19 points on 9-14 from the field.  Senior Suzy Carlson (State College, Pa.) also reached double figures with 18 points on 7-14 shooting.

The balanced scoring also featured junior Katie Tharp (Linton) with eight points; junior Candace Procter (Southfield, Mich./Groves) with six points, five rebounds and five steals; and junior Liz Ridgway (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Northwestern U.) with six points and nine rebounds.

A strong defensive effort keyed the victory, as Earlham was held to 24% from the field and 3-14 from three-point range.  Tasha Merrill led the Quakers with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Suzy Carlson pitched in with 18 points.

Rose-Hulman led 30-21 at the half, and extended the lead to 11 points early in the second half on a pair of occasions, on baskets by Forsyth.  Earlham closed within eight points at 43-35, before the Engineers relied on a three-pointer by Carlson and a field goal by Forsyth to gain a 48-35 advantage.

The Quakers trimmed the margin to 13 points at 55-42 on two free throws by Cassie Byrd at the 5:09 mark.  Rose-Hulman held the Quakers without a point for the last 5:09 and scored 10 consecutive points down the stretch for the final margin of victory.

The 1-0 Engineers return to action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. game against Tri-State University at Franklin College.
