CHICAGO, ILL. -
The Rose-Hulman volleyball team improved to 10-3 overall and
completed a perfect 5-0 weekend with victories over Knox,
Oneonta State and North Park on Saturday.
The Engineers extended their school record
winning streak to six with Saturday's three wins.
The day featured a rally from a 9-3 deficit in
game five against Oneonta State University to claim a 15-13 win. The
effort marked the largest game five comeback in school history, in a match that
also featured a 33-31 victory in game three.
Rose-Hulman topped Onenota State 30-20, 21-30,
33-31, 23-30, 15-13 in the win. Earlier in the day, the Engineers defeated
Knox College 30-16, 30-26, 30-27.
The team completed its three matches in one
day with another come from behind victory. North Park led the Engineers
2-1, before Rose-Hulman won games four and fives in the win.
Rose-Hulman topped North Park by a tally of
29-31, 30-25, 20-30, 30-24, 15-13 to earn its second five-game win of the day.
Against Knox, junior Sarah
Messmer (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) led the hitting attack with 13 kills
and sophomore Kate Sernett (Crystal Lake, Ill./Marian Central Catholic)
added nine. Senior Amanda Fellows (Beavercreek, Ohio) paced the
squad with five services, while junior Brandi Sturgill (Zionville,
N.C./Watauga) recorded 35 assists.
Defensively, freshman Sam
Gregory (Huntsville, Ala./Catholic) had team-high honors with 17 digs and
Sernett added 15. Messmer, Sturgill and freshman Amanda Jevons
(Henderson, Nev./Rancho) each had a pair of blocks.
In the Oneonta State match,
Fellows led the way with 14 kills. Messmer added 13 kills with just one
error, and senior Katie Tharp (Linton) pitched in with 11 kills.
Sturgill paced the Engineers
with 47 assists, with Jevons and Sturgill adding three service aces.
Messmer led three players with more than 20 digs with her 24 tally, followed by
Gregory at 22 and Sturgill at 21. Tharp led the blocking attack with one
solo and three assists.
The North Park match featured a
balanced attack that ended with five players in double figures in kills.
Jevons tallied 16 kills, with Messmer at 13, Tharp 12, Sernett 11 and Fellows 11
in the even effort.
Sturgill tallied a season-high
54 assists in the victory, and senior Erin Rumley (Portage/ Christian)
pitched in with three service aces. Messmer had a team-high 27 digs, with
Sernett (26) and Gregory (25) also surpassing the 25-mark.
Rose-Hulman stands 10-3 on the season and
travels to DePauw University for a non-conference matchup on Wednesday night.
