Terre Haute,
Ind. - The Engineers' bid for five straight wins ended after a
defeat by Lewis and Clark 30-27, 30-28, 30-23 in their third
game of the Rose-Hulman Invitational on Saturday.
Sophomore Kate Sernett
(Crystal Lake, Ill.) led the offensive attack for Rose-Hulman, leading the
team with 10 kills. Junior Sarah Messmer (Cincinnati, Ohio)
provided eight kills with freshman Amanda Jevons (Henderson, Nev.)
finishing with six kills.
Junior Brandi Sturgill (Zionville,
N.C.) led the team with 24 assists in the match.
On the defensive side,
freshman Samantha Gregory (Huntsville, Ala.) was the leader for the
Engineers in digs with nine, while Sernett and senior Amanda Fellows
(Beavercreek, Ohio) had six digs each.
In their tournament finale, the
Engineers defeated Eureka in four games 30-23, 25-30, 30-22, 30-19, to finish
the Rose-Hulman Invitational with a record of 3-1.
Messmer led the Engineer attack
against the Red Devils with 13 kills. Fellows also produced double figures in
the kills category with 12 of her own.
Sturgill once again led the way
for Rose-Hulman in assists with 45. In the two Saturday matches, Sturgill
had a total of 69 assists.
Jevons was a key contributor on
both sides of the net with four services aces and five block assists.
The story of the day was the
Engineer defensive effort, in which the team combined for 99 total digs in the
four game match with Eureka. Gregory led the team with 28 digs, Messmer
contributed with 22, Sturgill added 13, and Fellows rounded out the host of
Engineers in double figures for digs with 11.
The win improves the Engineers'
record to 5-3 for the season. Rose-Hulman will be back in action on Friday,
September 14 to take on Illinois College in the North Park Tournament at 5 p.m.
