Anderson Forced to Battle Before Topping Engineers

Sarah Messmer recorded 16 kills and 16 digs for the Engineers.

TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Anderson University remained one-half game out of first place in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings with a 30-32, 30-17, 30-21, 30-16 victory over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in volleyball action on Wednesday night.

The Engineers claimed the first game after rallying from a 29-28 deficit to capture the 32-30 win.  Anderson improved to 21-6 on the season by capturing the remaining three games.

Sophomore Sarah Messmer (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) led Rose-Hulman with a double-double of 16 kills and 16 digs.  Junior Amanda Fellows (Beavercreek, Ohio) reached double figures with 12 kills, while sophomore Brandi Sturgill (Zionville, N.C./Watauga) provided 41 assists.

The Engineer defense helped Rose-Hulman earn the first game victory and contributed a season best 111 digs.  Sophomore Katie Wolber (Brookville/Franklin County) had a team-high 25 digs, with freshman Kate Sernett (Crystal Lake, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) adding 21 and Sturgill contributing 20.

Rose-Hulman concludes its 2006 home schedule on Thursday against DePauw University at 7 p.m.
