Sturgill School Record Leads Rose-Hulman Volleyball to Win in Homecoming Thriller

Brandi Sturgill set a school record with 60 assists in the five-game win over Transylvania.

TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology sophomore Brandi Sturgill (Zionville, N.C./Watauga) set a school record with 60 assists to lead the Engineers past Transylvania 30-25, 30-28, 28-30, 25-30, 15-12 in a volleyball Homecoming thriller at Hulbert Arena on Saturday.

Sturgill's 60 assists passed the previous mark of 2005 graduate Lindsey Kerbel against Centre in 2002.  The Engineers smashed 69 total kills in the match to tie for the fifth most in program history.

Sophomore Sarah Messmer (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) led the offensive attack with a career-high 19 kills. 

The Engineers placed four players in double figures for kills, with freshman Kate Sernett (Crystal Lake, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) and junior Erin Rumley (Portage/ Christian) tallying 15 kills and junior Amanda Fellows (Beavercreek, Ohio) smashing 13.

Other key contributors to Rose-Hulman's attack included sophomore Mandy Kronmiller (Fort Wayne/Carroll) with 19 digs and the duo of Sernett and Sturgill with 13 digs each.  Messmer and junior Katie Tharp (Linton) and pitched in with four blocks each.

Rose-Hulman won its second match of the season and improved to 1-3 in HCAC play, while Transylvania dropped to 0-4 in league matches.  The Engineers travel to Defiance College on Thursday and Bluffton University on Friday.
