FRANKLIN, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology battled a pair of solid NAIA Midwest volleyball programs before falling to Spalding and Marian at Franklin on Saturday.

Spalding topped the Engineers 30-22, 30-17, 28-30, 30-10, before Marian earned a 30-16, 30-27, 30-16 win.

Junior Erin Rumley (Portage/ Christian) led the Engineers with eight kills against Spalding.  Sophomore Brandi Sturgill (Zionville, N.C./Watauga) pitched in with a team-high 24 assists.

Three Engineers reached double figures in digs against Spalding.  Freshman Kate Sernett (Crystal Lake, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) had a match-high 15 digs, sophomore Mandy Kronmiller (Fort Wayne/ Carroll) added 14 and Sturgill had 13.

Against Marian, junior Amanda Fellows (Beavercreek, Ohio) led the offense with seven kills and junior Katie Tharp (Linton) added six.  Sturgill led the squad with 18 assists.

Rose-Hulman dropped to 1-13 on the season and returns to action against Franklin College in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener on Tuesday at Hulbert Arena.
