Volleyball Team Tops Wilmington in Five Games to Highlight Night One of Rose-Hulman Invitational

A loud and proud crowd rooted on the Engineers to open the Rose-Hulman Invitational.

TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology earned a five-game victory over Wilmington College and dropped a three-game match to Earlham to open the Engineer Volleyball Invitational on Friday.

Rose-Hulman defeated Wilmington 30-20, 31-33, 31-20, 28-30, 15-6 in front of a spirited crowd at Hulbert Arena late Friday.  Earlham opened the evening with a 30-25, 30-14, 30-20 victory over the Engineers.

Junior Amanda Fellows (Beavercreek, Ohio) led the Engineers with 16 kills and three service aces in the Wilmington victory.  Junior Katie Tharp (Linton) added 12 kills, a total matched by sophomore Sarah Messmer (Cincinnati, Ohio/ McNicholas), who committed no hitting errors in the match.  Messmer added two solo blocks with four block assists.

Sophomore Brandi Sturgill (Zionville, N.C./Watauga) recorded a team-high 45 assists and pitched in with two service aces.  Sophomore Mandy Kronmiller (Fort Wayne/Carroll) led the defensive effort with 18 digs, while Fellows had 11.

Freshman Kate Sernett (Crystal Lake, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) led the Engineers with seven kills, with Sturgill adding a team-high 19 assists.

Tharp pitched in with four blocks, including a pair of solo efforts.  Kronmiller recorded a pair of service aces to lead the Engineer effort.

Rose-Hulman improved to 1-5 on the season and squares off against Centre and Principia on Saturday.
