Larry
Cole, who has coached 49 NCAA Division III All-Americans in a 20-year head coaching career, enters his
sixth season at Rose-Hulman
Institute of Technology this fall.
Cole
helped lead the men's track and field program to its first
conference championship since 1989 with a first-place finish in the
2008 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships.
The efforts included five all-conference honorees and a Most
Valuable Field Events Award for senior standout Thomas Reives.
Cole
has helped revitalize the Rose-Hulman women's track and field
program, while continuing the tradition of men's success. The women
have established 35 school records in the last four years, including
the team's best-ever finish with a third place in the 2007 HCAC
Championships.
For his efforts,
Cole was honored as the 2008 HCAC Men's Track and Field Coach of the Year for
his third career league-wide award.
The Engineer men's
team has featured nine individual conference champions in the last four
seasons for a program that features 33 All-American awards by 14
student-athletes since 1975. The 2007 season featured a third-place
outdoor national finish by All-American pole vaulter
Ryan Schipper.

Cole’s success extends to his cross country squads.
In 2007, the Engineers enjoyed their best season in more than a decade with a
third-place finish in the HCAC championships. At Ohio Northern, his teams earned four league
runner-up finishes from 1990-97.
He has coached 22 all-conference runners,
one All-American and one Ohio College Division Runner of the Year throughout his
cross country coaching career.
Cole's efforts also helped Rose-Hulman land
the hosting role for the 2007 and 2009 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field National
Championships. He previously served as the meet director for the
1995 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Nationals at Ohio Northern.
Cole began his coaching career at Muskingum
College (Ohio) as the men’s and women’s track and field coach from 1982-90. At
Muskingum, he coached 52 conference champions, 15 NCAA Division III
All-Americans, and four conference women’s championship teams.
Cole then moved on to Ohio Northern
University, where he coached 72 conference champions, 33 NCAA Division III
All-Americans, and was twice named conference Coach of the Year from 1990-97.
He was also named both the Great Lakes
Region men’s and women’s Coach of the Year in 1996.
Off the track, Cole served as the first vice
president of the NCAA Track and Field Coaches Association of 1997 and served on
the Executive Committee of the United States Track and Field Association from
1995-97.

Matthew Cole

Matthew
Cole enters his second year as head women's cross country coach and his
fourth season with the track and field coaching staff this fall.
The women’s cross
country team recorded a historic 2007 effort in Cole’s first season as head
coach. The Engineers placed third overall in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic
Conference with an effort that featured all-league accolades for Rachel Krasich
and Melissa Rogers.
Krasich also became
the first Engineer female student-athlete to qualify for an NCAA Division III
National Championship event with her 11th place performance at the Great Lakes
Regional on Nov. 10. She competed in the NCAA Division III National
Championships at St. Olaf College in mid-November and placed 138th of 280
runners.
For the track and
field team, Cole specializes in hurdles and sprint events. Cole tutored 2007
HCAC hurdles champions Michael Burris and Katy Evert.
Cole also works as
the team’s video coordinator, Finishlynx Timing System Operator and added
responsibilities as assistant director for the NCAA Division III Indoor Track
and Field National Championships at Rose-Hulman in 2007.
During his running
career at Mount Union College, Cole was a four-time Ohio Athletic Conference
champion in the high hurdles. He earned two NCAA Division III National
Qualifications and ranked fourth nationally during the 2005 season. Cole holds
the Mount Union school record in the 55-meter hurdles.
Cole completed his
bachelor’s degree in media computing and sports management at Mount Union in
2005. He is married to Rose-Hulman’s assistant athletic trainer Kristen.

Christy Sherman
* Assistant Track and Field Coach
Christy Sherman enters her fifth season as an assistant coach for
throwing events at Rose-Hulman.
Sherman earned four All-American honors in the shot put at Indiana State
University, including three second-place finishes at NCAA Division I
championships, from 1990-91.
Sherman recorded a personal best mark
of 58’ 7” as a member of the United States team at the 1993 World Championships
to record one of the top 20 throws in United States history.
Her work ethic in the weight room
resulted in her receiving All-America honors in strength and conditioning from
1989-91. In 1991, Sherman was named the National Strength and Conditioning
Association Athlete of the Year.
Sherman’s efforts helped Rose-Hulman
earn two Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference field event titles in 2007.
Six student-athletes earned top-three finishes in the throwing events, with
Janel Belton named HCAC Field Athlete of the Year.
Sherman is employed by the Vigo County
School Corporation as a teacher at Deming Elementary School. She is married to
husband John, associate athletic director at Indiana State University.
