NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships event
in three years on March 13-14, 2009. |
TERRE
HAUTE, IND.
- The NCAA Championships Committee has awarded Rose-Hulman
Institute of Technology hosting rights for the 2009 NCAA Division
III Indoor Track and Field National Championships.
The
event, scheduled for March 13-14 in 2009, marks the second time over
a three-year span that Rose-Hulman will host the championships.
The college previously hosted a successful 2007 indoor track and
field national championship last March.
"Hosting
an event of this caliber brings national attention to Rose-Hulman
and the Terre Haute community. An NCAA championship event
enables our institute to showcase our beautiful campus and
outstanding athletic facilities. We are extremely honored to
be selected to host this prestigious meet," said Rose-Hulman head
track and field coach Larry Cole.
John
Curtin, veteran head coach at Emory University in Atlanta, offered a
perspective on Rose-Hulman's efforts at last spring's championships.
"I've
been going to national championships for over 20 years, and the
Rose-Hulman experience was the best we've had. Everything was
done to give the student-athletes a first-class experience.
(Coach Larry Cole's) attention to detail and the quality campus
staff shined through in every way. I'm ecstatic that the
national championships will be returning to Rose-Hulman," said
Curtin.
Over 400
student-athletes and 160 coaches from 125 institutions competed in
the 2007 championships at Rose-Hulman. Williams College
claimed the women's national championship, and Lincoln University
earned the men's title in front of standing room crowds on both days
of the meet.
"The city
of Terre Haute and the Convention and Visitors Bureau are excited to
work with Rose-Hulman as host for the 2009 Division III Track and
Field National Championships. Rose-Hulman provides a wonderful
venue for this athletic event, and our community serves as a proud
host for the visitors that will spend a memorable weekend in Terre
Haute," said David Patterson, director of the Terre Haute Convention
and Visitors Bureau.
The 28
events also brought 65 of the nation's top track and field officials
to Terre Haute, including several who have worked in the Olympic
Games.
The 2009
Indoor Track and Field National Championships will be the fourth
NCAA Division III title event that Rose-Hulman has hosted in the
past seven years. The college previously hosted the 2002 and
2003 Women's Basketball Championships, along with the 2007 Track and
Field Championships. Rose-Hulman also hosted the 1995 Men's
and Women's Golf Championships at Hulman Links Golf Course.
