  Rose-Hulman News Engineers Open Outdoor Season With Eight Event Wins

TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- The Rose-Hulman track and field squad opened the outdoor season with the Rose-Hulman Early Bird meet at William M. Welch Track on a frigid Saturday afternoon.

The unscored meet featured teams from Dension, DePauw, Hanover, Franklin, and Lake Erie.

The Rose-Hulman men were led senior Matt Repking (Effingham, Ill./Teutopolis) who took top honors in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a winning effort of 9:36.08, just under six seconds shy of a Rose-Hulman school record.

Rose-Hulman 4-x-100 meter relay of senior Thomas Reives (Indianapolis/Arsenal Tech), sophomore Calvin Bueltel (Huntingburg/Southridge), and freshmen Robby Alumbaugh (Mooresville) and Jerry Belton (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway West) took top honors in the event with a time of 43.72 seconds.

The Engineer 4-x-400 meter relay consisting of senior Bill Guiney (Centerville, Ohio), sophomore Will Reilly (Indianapolis/North Central), freshman Paul Bouagnon (St. Charles, Ill./Burlington Central), and Bueltel captured first place in a winning time of 3:25.70.

Reives also took second place in the triple jump with a leap of 42’ 1 ½”, with Bueltel capturing second place honors on the 200-meter dash in 22.66 seconds.

Sophomore Michael Burris (Terre Haute/North) captured first place in 110-meter hurdles with a winning time of 15.73 seconds.

Other top finishes for the Rose-Hulman men in the running events included a second place finish by sophomore Eric Clark (Wooster, Ohio/Triway) in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:13.11, and third place showings by freshmen Derek Bischak (Angola) in the 800-meter run (2:02.26), David Caldwell (Plymouth) in the 3000-meter steeplechase (10:13.75), Kabe Mattocks (Cloverdale) in the 400-meter hurdles (1:05.53) and Reilly in the 200-meter dash (23.23).

In the field events the Rose-Hulman men were led by junior Vince Forcellini (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) who took second place in the javelin with a toss of 164’ 3” and third place in the hammer throw with a distance of 126’ 8”.

Other top field event finishes included senior Tim Hachfeld (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) who took second place in the discus with a toss of 126’ 1”. Sophomore Matt LaCross (Presque Isle, Mich./Alpena) picked up a third place finish for the Engineers in the high jump with a leap of 5’ 8”, while the Engineers got fourth place finishes from sophomores Jared Stermole (North Ridgeville, Ohip) in the hammer throw (122’ 6”) and Travis Vanderberg (Kansas City, Mo./West) in the javelin (147’ 2”).

The Rose-Hulman women were led by senior Rachel Krasich (Westfield) who won the 3000-meter steeplechase in a time of 11:47.71, smashing her own school record time of 12:01.33 established last season.

Senior Katy Evert (Huntley, Ill.) took third place honors in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:14.99 and fifth in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.54 seconds, while fellow senior Susan Nickol (Solo, Ohio/Beaumont School) placed fifth in the 1500-meter run in 5:08.75.

Off the track, the Engineer women were led by senior Janel Belton (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway West) and freshman Satomi Kaminaga (Tokyo, Japan/American).

Belton finished the afternoon with five top five finishes winning the discus with a throw of 115’ 2”, taking third place in the shot put with a toss of 35’ 8 ½”, finishing fourth in the hammer throw with an attempt of 103’ 6”, and capturing fifth place honors in the javelin with a throw of 48’ 10”.

Kaminaga began her outdoor career as an Engineer by taking first place in the triple jump with a leap of 29’ 11 ½” and second place in the long jump with an attempt of 13’ 11 ½”.

Rose-Hulman picked up a sweep in the javelin, led by junior Liz Ridgway (Grosse Point, Mich./Northwestern Univ.) who won the event with a toss of 97’ 8”, third best in Rose-Hulman history, with sophomores Sabrina Liechty (Coal City, Ind./Clay City) taking second place (83’ 0”), Katie Moorhead (Wauwatosa, Wis.) third (81’ 3”), and Rebecca Fehribach (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) fourth (69’ 4”).

The Engineer women also took the top four places in the discus with Belton first, Moorhead second (106’ 0”), Fehribach third (102’ 0”), and junior Jessica Haraburda (Clinton/South Vermillion) fourth (101’ 2”).

The Rose-Hulman track and field squads will return to action next Saturday when they travel to Rhodes College for the Rhodes Invitational.
