  Rose-Hulman News Eight First-Place Efforts Lead Rose-Hulman at Collegiate Open

TERRE HAUTE, IND. -  Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology earned eight first-place finishes to open the indoor track and field season at the Engineer Collegiate Open Meet on Friday night.

The meet featured student-athletes from Clayton State University (Ga.), Franklin College, Indiana State University and Rose-Hulman.

The men's squad captured five first-place finishes to lead the team effort.  Sophomore Jonathan Rogers (Terre Haute/North) claimed the pole vault title with a leap of 13' 11 1/4", senior Nate Bloss (Eau Claire, Wis./Regis) won the triple jump with an effort of 38' 11 3/4", and junior Kyle Winterrowd (Zionsville) captured the 800-meter run in a time of 2:09.85.

The men's 4-x-200-meter relay team of freshman Robby Alumbaugh (Mooresville), senior Thomas Reives (Indianapolis/Arsenal Tech), senior Bill Guiney (Centerville, Ohio) and sophomore Calvin Bueltel (Huntingburg/Southridge) added a victory in 1:34.76.  The men's 4-x-400-meter relay team of sophomore Will Reilly (Indianapolis/North Central), freshman E.J. Oruche (Fishers/Chatard), Reives and sophomore Kris Williams (Greenwood) capped the evening with a win in a time of 3:38.78.

On the women's side, senior Janel Belton (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway West) topped the women's shot put with a throw of 36' 9".  Senior Katy Evert (Huntley, Ill.) claimed the 55-meter high hurdles in 9.98 seconds and freshman Anastasia Tarpeh (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills) won the 200-meter dash in 27.42 seconds. 

Runner-up performances included two second-place throwing efforts from sophomore Jared Stermole (North Ridgeville, Ohio).  Stermole placed second in the men's weight throw (42' 6 3/4") and in the shot put (42' 4").

Other second-place efforts were earned by sophomore Jessica Haraburda (Clinton/South Vermillion) with a toss of 36' 11 1/2" in the women's weight throw; freshman Michael Hackman (Seymour) in the men's triple jump with a leap 37' 5 3/4"; sophomore Justin Druba (Hanover/ Southwestern) in the mile run (4:48.52); freshman Andrew Storey (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) in the 800-meter run (2:16.21); and Bueltel in the 200-meter dash (23.57).

The Engineers return to action at the seven-team Friday Night Invitational at the Rose-Hulman Sports and Recreation Center next weekend.
