FINAL RESULTS

BLUFFTON, OHIO -  Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology finished second in men's and third in women's competition with a total of eight individual league champions at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference track and field championships on Saturday.

Junior Janel Belton (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway West) and senior Ryan Schipper (Fort Wayne/ Dwenger) led the Engineers by sweeping the two Field Athlete of the Meet awards.

Belton won the discus throw and placed second in the shot put to lead the women's effort, while Schipper won the pole vault and added a fifth in the triple jump and a sixth in the long jump for Rose-Hulman.

Belton set a pair of school records with her strong performances.  The winning discus throw carried 125' 2", while the shot put toss of 38' 4 1/4" also snapped her own previous record mark.

Schipper holds the distinction of owning the pole vault conference record in both the HCAC and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference after his victory.  He cleared 15' 8 1/4" to set the new HCAC mark and recorded a triple jump of 41' 3" and a long jump of 20' 11 1/4" to add another pair of placements.

The Engineers performance featured a total of eight individuals combining for eight conference championships. 

On the women's side, junior Katy Evert (Huntley, Ill.) won the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:09.84.  Senior Kathleen Stynes (Okemos, Mich.) matched her own school record with a 9' 0 1/4" clearance in the pole vault and Belton added the discus title.

On the men's side, freshman Michael Burris (Terre Haute/North) and senior Thomas Reives (Indianapolis/Arsenal Tech) had strong meets that featured one title each.

Burris won the 110-high hurdles in a time of 15.54 seconds and Reives captured the triple jump with a leap of 42' 11" in just his second competition of the year in the event. 

Burris added a second in the 400-hurdles (57.86) and Reives placed second in the high jump (6' 4"), and the duo combined with junior Bill Guiney (Centreville, Ohio) and freshman Calvin Bueltel (Huntingburg/Southridge) for a second in the 4-x-100-meter relay in 43.07.

Other winners on the men's side included junior Matt Repking (Effingham, Ill./Teutopolis) with a victory in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 9:39.11 and junior B.J. Esarey (Defiance, Ohio) with a victory in the javelin throw with a toss of 170' 11".

The second-place men's team finish also featured a second-place finish by the 4-x-400-meter relay team in a time of 3:25.63.  Freshman Will Reilly (Indianapolis/North Central), senior Michael Brandell (Haslett, Mich.), Bueltel and Guiney combined on the relay effort.

Third-place finishers on the men's side included freshman Jared Stermole (North Ridgeville, Ohio) in the discus throw (133' 7") and freshman Travis Vanderberg (Kansas City, Mo./West) in the javelin (160' 0").

Bueltel pitched in with a fourth place in the 100-meter dash (11.36) and a fifth in the 200 (23.17).  Freshman Stephen Boedicker (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) also placed fourth in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 33:57.50.

Other fifth-place results were recorded by Reives in the 100-meters (11.43), Brandell in the 800-meters (2:02.41), Repking in the 5,000-meters (16:21.52), Schipper in the triple jump (41' 3"); and senior Paul Ceravolo (Warren, Mich./Mott) in the discus (131' 0").

On the women's side, Rose-Hulman combined for four second-place finishes and four third-place efforts.  Senior Mandy Hecker (Georgetown/North Harrison) earned all-conference honors with a second-place finish in both the 800-meter run (2:24.24) and 1,500-meter run (4:50.90).

Junior Rachel Krasich (Westfield) came home second in the steeplechase in 12:06.55, while Belton added the final second-place finish in the shot put.

Freshman Sarita Stephney (Houston, Texas/Hastings) added a third place in the 100-meter dash and a fourth in the 200 (27.25).  Other third-place finishers on the women's side included Evert in the 100-meter hurdles (17.04); freshman Melissa Rogers (Crawfordsville/Southmont) in the 800-meter run (2:27.62); freshman Rebecca Fehribach (Columbus, Ohio/Hillard Darby) in the discus (118' 3").

The 4-x-400-meter relay team of Evert, junior Alissa Bishel (Chesterton), Hecker and freshman Amanda Lundahl (Lake Forest, Ill.) also came home third in 118' 3".

The women's top finishes were rounded out by fifth-place efforts for Bishel in the 400-meters (1:02.57), Rogers in the 1,500 (5:04.18), Stynes in the high jump (4' 9 1/4") and freshman Katie Moorhead (Wauwatosa, Wis.) in the javelin (84' 0").

The team result of second for the men's squad is the best finish in a conference championship for a Rose-Hulman team since 1989, when the Engineers captured the College Athletic Conference title.  The women's third-place finish marked a school record, and champions Belton, Evert and Stynes join only 1997 graduate Nikki Overman as a conference champion.
