Relay Victory Lifts Rose-Hulman Men Past Wabash
TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's track and field team captured top honors in the final event of the afternoon to earn a 66-65 victory over Wabash College on Saturday at the Sports and Recreation Center. The Terre Haute Double Dual also featured an Indiana State sweep of Illinois State. The Sycamores won the women's competition 94-52 and the men's matchup 98-48. The 4-x-400-meter relay team of freshman Calvin Bueltel (Huntingburg/Southridge), freshman Travis Vanderberg (Kansas City, Mo./West), junior Bill Guiney (Centerville, Ohio) and freshman Will Reilly (Indianapolis/North Central) topped the Wabash relay team with a time of 3:36.07 to earn the meet win. Top performances for the Engineer men included a pair of narrow misses in attempt to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Division III National Championships. Junior Thomas Reives (Indianapolis/N. Central) recorded the fifth-best high jump effort in Rose-Hulman history with a leap of 6' 6". Senior Ryan Schipper (Fort Wayne/Bishop Dwenger) cleared 15' 1" in the pole vault to finish second overall against Division I competition from Indiana State and Illinois State.
Individual winners in the dual matchup with Wabash included Reilly in the 400-meter dash (54.48 seconds); Reives in the high jump; Schipper in the pole vault; junior Nate Bloss (Eau Claire, Wis./Regis) with a triple jump leap of 38' 1 1/2"; senior Paul Ceravolo (Warren, Mich./Mott) with a shot put toss of 44' 5 1/2"; and sophomore Vince Forcellini (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) with a weight throw toss of 41' 11 1/4".
Several strong performances also occurred in the women's effort, in competition with Indiana State and Illinois State. Junior Rachel Krasich (Westfield) highlighted the day with a school record performance in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:49.87. Senior Mandy Hecker (Georgetown/N. Harrison) narrowly missed her own school record with a fourth place in the mile run in 5:24.82. Freshman Sarita Stephney (Houston, Texas/Hasting) ran times of 8.31 seconds in the 60-meter dash and a top-five all-time effort of 27.82 in the 200-meter dash. Senior Kathleen Stynes (Okemos, Mich.) also narrowly missed topping her own school record with a high jump of 4' 11 3/4". The Engineers return to action with the Rose-Hulman Quad on Jan. 20 at 12:30 p.m. in the Sports and Recreation Center. | ||||||
