Adam Effinger -- heading to the NCAA Division III National Championships from Mar. 16-18.

TERRE HAUTE, IND. – Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology sophomore Adam Effinger (Plainfield) will compete in three events at the 2006 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships at Minneapolis from Thursday through Saturday, according to the official entry sheets posted by the NCAA last week.

Effinger earned his spot at nationals by recording the 15th best time in the nation in the 100-butterfly with a time of 50.84 seconds.  He will also compete in the 200-butterfly after recording a season-best time of 1:54.13 and the 50-freestyle after a time of 22.17 seconds.  His week begins with the 50-freestyle on Thursday, followed by the 100-butterfly on Friday and the 200-butterfly on Saturday.

Effinger becomes the fourth Rose-Hulman men’s swimmer to compete at the NCAA Division III Championships.  Matt Smith claimed a national championship in the 100-breaststroke in 2003 to highlight a career that featured four All-American awards.  Sean Valentine earned a pair of All-American honors in 1999, in the 50-freestyle and the 100-breaststroke.  David Breiding also competed at the NCAA Championships in 2002.

Effinger won two events at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference meet in February to qualify for the national championships, capturing titles in the 100-butterfly and 200-butterfly.  His efforts helped the 800-yard freestyle team earn all-conference recognition.

Effinger holds individual school records in the 100- and 200-butterfly events, along with part of the 800-freestyle relay mark.  He ranks second in school history in the 200-individual medley.
