  Rose-Hulman News Men's Swimming and Diving Places Third;
Women's Squad Comes Home Second at Illinois Wesleyan
 

Rose-Hulman Traveled to Illinois Wesleyan for a Tri-Match Saturday.

MEET RESULTS

BLOOMINGTON, IND. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men finished third while the women placed second at the Illinois Wesleyan triangular swimming meet Saturday.

The men had two first-place efforts while finishing second four times and third three times. 

The men were led by junior diver Michael Gerdov (Champaign,Ill./Central), who won the one-meter diving with a score of 254 and won the three-meter spot with a score of 270.

Freshman John Huster (Terre Haute, Ind./North Vigo) won first in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of  2:08.97.  Huster also finished second in the 100 backstroke in a time 56:87.

Senior Brian Yount (Bloomington, Ill.) finished second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22:99.  Freshman Matthew Ross (West Lafayette, Ind./Harrison) also finished second in the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:02.79.

The third place finishers were freshman Alex Krull (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette), freshman Michael Yuhas (Fremont, Ohio/Freemont-Ross) in the 1000 freestyle, 11:15.48, and senior Clayton Shotwell (Arcadia, Ind./Hamilton Heights) in the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.42.

On the women's side, the women had three first place finishes, five second place efforts and three third place finishes. 

The women were led by freshman Carley Shumate (Colorado Springs, Colo./ Pine Creek) who finished with a first place in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:25.18.  She also finished second in the 200 backstroke, swimming the distance in 2:25.18.

Senior Deborah Aleksa (Glendale, Ariz./ Dear Valley) got a first place finish in the 1,000 freestyle, swimming the distance in 11:53.19.  She also had a third place finish in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:21.27.

Senior Stephanie Hance (Noblesville, Ind.) also had a first and a third place finish.  She won the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:06.6.  Her third place finish came in the 100 butterfly, finishing in 1:07.19.

Freshman Corey Smith (Auburn, Wash./ Mountainview) finished twice in two events as she swam the 100 breaststroke in 1:21.27 and also swam the 50 freestyle in 27.50.

Junior Katie Trella (Des Plaines, Ill./ Maine Township) contributed the effort as she had two second place finishes and a third place effort.  She finished second in the 1000 freestyle, 12:01.86, and the 500 freestyle, 5:52.03.  She finished third in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:02.82.

The swimming teams return to action next Saturday as they travel to Millikin.
