Engineers Fall in Dual Meet to Transylvania for Conference Points

Jacob Sorensen led the Engineers with a pair of wins in the 200-individual medley and the 100-freestyle.

LEXINGTON, KY. – Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology captured six individual men's victories and three women's wins to highlight a dual meet against Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Transylvania University on Saturday.

The men dropped a 121-115 loss to Transylvania, while the women also lost a 137-70 decision.

A pair of school record diving scores helped lead Rose-Hulman's efforts.  Freshman Mark Parzych (Pearland, Texas/Central) set a new six-dive, one-meter school record with 242.00 points.  Sophomore Matt Melton (Griffith) added a three-meter, six-dive record with 204.45 points. 

Junior Jacob Sorensen (Enterprise, Ala.) and sophomore Steven Vande Lune (Kokomo) paced the Engineers, each with two individual wins and a leg in the relay win.  Sorensen swam a 2:03.99 in the 200-individual medley and a 50.24 100-freestyle while Vande Lune won the 1,000-freestyle with a time of 10:50.50 and 500-freestyle time of 5:02.67.

Other individual winners for the Engineers included junior Adam Effinger (Plainfield) with a 200-butterfly time of 2:01.22 and sophomore Nick Lee (Bryan, Texas) teamed up with Vande Lune, Sorensen and Effinger for the 400-freestyle relay win with a time of 3:20.57.  Lee also finished third all-time in the 200-backstroke with his effort of 2:01.62.

On the women's side, event winners included freshmen Stephanie Hance (Noblesville) and Deborah Aleksa (Glendale, Ariz./Dear Valley) with a 200-backstroke time of 2:20.27 and 200-breaststroke time of 2:50.73 respectively, and 400-freestyle relay time of 4:36.00 by junior Leslie Cottingham (Attica, Ind./ Seeger)  and freshmen Sarah Nejfelt (Gosport, Ind./Edgewood), Jessica Neeb (Fountaintown, Ind./New Palestine), and Aleksa.

The Rose-Hulman season continues with a home match against DePauw on Jan. 24 at 7 p.m.
