HANOVER, IND. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of
Technology softball team relied on a 10-2 and 2-0 doubleheader
sweep over Hanover College on Saturday to claim hosting rights
for the 2008 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference
Tournament.
The Engineers earned a share of the league's
regular season championship with the pair of wins and a 13-3
conference mark. Bluffton University also finished 13-3
after sweeping Hanover on Sunday.
Rose-Hulman earned the top seed and hosting
rights for the tournament, however, due to their two-game sweep
at Bluffton earlier this season.
In the opener, the Engineers
scored four times in the first, three in the fifth and three in the seventh to
earn a 10-2 victory.
Sophomore Jordan Goslee (St.
Joesph, Mich.) led the Engineers with three hits, three runs scored and
three RBIs. Sophomore Brittany Bernthold (Fisherville, Ky./Eastern)
added three singles, one run and one RBI.
Other Engineers with multiple
hit games in the opener included freshman Kyla Lutz (Tennyson/Boonville)
with two singles and two runs scored; sophomore Kristin Greer (Batavia, Ohio)
with a single, double and three RBIs; and senior Katie Maggard (Floyds
Knobs/Floyd Central) with a single, double and two RBIs.
In the circle, Maggard was
sharp once again with a complete game three-hitter that featured just one earned
run allowed. Maggard walked two and struck out four to improve to 9-3.
In the nightcap, Goslee tossed
a complete-game two-hitter with six strikeouts to lead the Engineers to a 2-0
victory. Rose-Hulman scored once in the sixth and once in the seventh to
break open the pitching duel.
Offensively, Goslee had three
hits and Maggard added two singles and one RBI. Senior Katie Yiznitsky
(Hamilton, Ohio/Fairfield) contributed a double to the offense.
Rose-Hulman stands 24-10 overall on the season
and will host the four-team double-elimination tournament
starting Friday. Exact start times and an event webpage
will be posted early this week.
