TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- The Fightin' Engineer
softball team split a pair of games with rival St.
Mary-of-the-Woods College on Thursday night, dropping the opener
7-1, before bouncing back to win the nightcap 7-4.
The Engineers were led by sophomore Brittany
Bernthold (Fisherville, Ky./Eastern) who finished the
evening with five-for-seven at the plate and driving in three
runs, while scoring two.
Sophomore Kristin Greer (Batavia, Ohio)
also finished the doubleheader with four hits in six at bats and
two runs scored in the split effort.
The Pomeroys were defeated the Engineers in the
opener behind a strong pitching effort from Ashley Loomis who
limited the Rose-Hulman offense to only three hits.
St. Mary-of-the-Woods gained an early one run
lead in the top of the first frame before adding six more runs
in the fifth for a 7-0 advantage.
The Engineers managed a run in the bottom of the
sixth after Bernthold singled and later scored on an error.
In the nightcap, the Pomeroys once again struck
first, scoring a run in the top half of the first before
Rose-Hulman responded with three runs of their own in the bottom
of the second after a Bernthold triple scored sophomore
Angela Starner (Somerset, Ohio/Sheridan) and Green.
Four more runners crossed the plate in the bottom
of the Engineer third when freshman Kyla Lutz
(Tennyson/Boonville) scored on a throwing error followed by
a two-run double by freshman Kayla Yano (Ontario, Ore.)
that plated two more. The fourth run of the inning came
when senior Katie Maggard (Floyds Knobs/Floyd Central)
scored on a Bernthold single.
Sophomore Jordan Goslee (St. Joseph, Mich.)
earned the pitching victory in the nightcap to improve to 11-2
on the season, allowing just one earned run and striking out
nine.
Rose-Hulman improved its record to 22-10 on the
season after the split and will return on action on Saturday

close out the regular season.
