TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- The Rose-Hulman softball team took both games of Wednesday night's doubleheader against visiting Mt. St. Joseph by finals of 3-0 and 4-3.

Senior Ashley Montgomery (Plainfield) led Rose-Hulman offensively finishing the evening with four hits in seven at bats and driving in three runs, the last being the game-winner in the nightcap.

Montgomery also stole a pair of bases and scored two runs in the winning efforts.

In the circle, senior Katie Maggard (Floyds Knobs/Floyd Central) picked up the victory in the opener, shutting out the Lions, scattering only three hits and striking out six.

In the opener, the Engineers scored on an RBI double off the bat of senior Katie Yiznitsky (Hamilton, Ohio/Fairfield) in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead.  Rose-Hulman added two more runs in the bottom half of the fifth on double by Montgomery that scored sophomore Brittany Bernthold (Fisherville, Ky./Eastern) and freshman Kayla Yano (Ontario, Ore.) providing the final tally of 3-0.

In the nightcap, Rose-Hulman got on the board first by scoring three runs in the bottom of third when Yiznitsky delivered a bases-clearing double off the base of the wall in left center that scored Bernthold, Maggard, and Montgomery who all singled earlier in the inning.

Mt. St. Joseph closed the gap to 3-1 with a run in the fifth and tied the game at 3-3 in the sixth on a two run blast by Ashleigh Stallkamp.

The Engineers prevailed in the bottom of the seventh after sophomore Darcie Thomas (Brighton, Mich.) reached on an error to start the inning.  Senior Samantha Sheets (Milford, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) came in to pinch run for Thomas and advanced to second on a wild pitch before being moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Bernthold.  Sheets them came in to score the winning run after a line drive single down the left field line by Montgomery, giving the Engineers the 4-3 victory.

Sophomore Jordan Goslee (St. Joseph, Mich.) improved her record to 10-2 on the season by picking up the win in the nightcap.

The win improved Rose-Hulman to 21-9 on the season and 11-3 in HCAC play.  The Engineers will return on action on Thursday night at 5:30 when they host rival St. Mary-of-the-Woods College.
