TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- The Rose-Hulman softball
team took both games of Wednesday night's doubleheader against
visiting Mt. St. Joseph by finals of 3-0 and 4-3.
Senior Ashley Montgomery (Plainfield) led
Rose-Hulman offensively finishing the evening with four hits in
seven at bats and driving in three runs, the last being the
game-winner in the nightcap.
Montgomery also stole a pair of bases and scored
two runs in the winning efforts.
In the circle, senior Katie Maggard (Floyds
Knobs/Floyd Central) picked up the victory in the opener,
shutting out the Lions, scattering only three hits and striking
out six.
In the opener, the Engineers scored on an RBI
double off the bat of senior Katie Yiznitsky (Hamilton,
Ohio/Fairfield) in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0
lead. Rose-Hulman added two more runs in the bottom half
of the fifth on double by Montgomery that scored sophomore
Brittany Bernthold (Fisherville, Ky./Eastern) and freshman
Kayla Yano (Ontario, Ore.) providing the final tally of
3-0.
In the nightcap, Rose-Hulman got on the board
first by scoring three runs in the bottom of third when
Yiznitsky delivered a bases-clearing double off the base of the
wall in left center that scored Bernthold, Maggard, and
Montgomery who all singled earlier in the inning.
Mt. St. Joseph closed the gap to 3-1 with a run
in the fifth and tied the game at 3-3 in the sixth on a two run
blast by Ashleigh Stallkamp.
The Engineers prevailed in the bottom of the
seventh after sophomore Darcie Thomas (Brighton, Mich.)
reached on an error to start the inning. Senior
Samantha Sheets (Milford, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) came in to
pinch run for Thomas and advanced to second on a wild pitch
before being moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Bernthold.
Sheets them came in to score the winning run after a line drive
single down the left field line by Montgomery, giving the
Engineers the 4-3 victory.
Sophomore Jordan Goslee (St. Joseph, Mich.)
improved her record to 10-2 on the season by picking up the win
in the nightcap.
The win improved Rose-Hulman to 21-9 on the
season and 11-3 in HCAC play. The Engineers will return on
action on Thursday night at 5:30 when they host rival St.
Mary-of-the-Woods College.
