  Rose-Hulman News Rose-Hulman Stands 13-3 After Twinbill Split with St. Mary's

TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology softball team split a twinbill against another of the top teams in the Great Lakes Region in its doubleheader against St. Mary's College on Sunday.

The Engineers won the opener by a 10-4 score, before falling 4-2 in the nightcap.  The split left both teams with a 13-3 record on the season.

Rose-Hulman tied a school record with its 10th consecutive victory in the convincing opening game win.  The Engineers smashed 15 hits against the Belles, with a seven-run fourth inning propelling the win.

Sophomore Brittany Bernthold (Fisherville, Ky./Eastern) slapped three hits, scored twice and had one RBI to lead a strong offensive effort.

A group of five Engineers each provided two hits in the opening game.  Senior Ashley Montgomery (Plainfield) had two singles, two runs and two RBIs.  Ssenior Katie Frey (Cedar Grove/Franklin County) and senior Katie Maggard (Floyds Knobs/Floyd Central) each had two hits, two RBIs and scored one.  Sophomore Kristen Greer (Batavia, Ohio) and senior Katie Yiznitsky (Fairfield, Ohio) rounded out the multiple hit performances in game one.

In the circle, freshman C.J. Weist (Hazleton/Princeton) improved to 3-0 in her rookie season with a complete game victory.  Wiest scattered nine hits with two strikeouts in the effort.

In the nightcap, St. Mary's snapped a 2-2 tie with single runs in the fifth and seventh innings in the victory.  Freshman Kyla Lutz (Tennyson/Boonville) slapped three hits and tossed five innings and allowed just two earned runs to lead the team.

Rose-Hulman stands 13-3 on the season and returns to action with doubleheaders at MacMurray on Tuesday and Monmouth (Ill.) on Wednesday.
