LEXINGTON, KY. -- The Rose-Hulman Fightin’ Engineers softball team picked up a pair of victories over Transylvania University in their conference opener on Saturday afternoon.

In game one, the Engineers defeated the host Pioneers by a final of 11-3 after scoring four first inning runs and relying on a strong pitching effort by senior Katie Maggard (Floyds Knobs/Floyd Central) who tossed six strong innings allowing just two earned runs on eight hits.

Senior Ashley Montgomery (Plainfield) became Rose-Hulman’s all-time hit leader with four hits in the game and now has 126 in her career, breaking the previous mark of 121 set by Amy Viles.

Montgomery also became the all-time leading run scorer at Rose-Hulman with 91, with a score in the nightcap.

Sophomore Jordan Goslee (St. Joseph, Mich.) helped the Engineer cause going three-for-four and driving in three runs while scoring two.

Freshmen Kyla Lutz (Tennyson/Boonville) and Kayla Yano (Ontario, Ore.) also had multiple hit games with Lutz tallying a pair of hits in three plate appearances, driving in a run and Yano going two-for-three with an RBI and a run scored.  The pitching victory improved Maggard to 4-1 on the year with a 1.73 ERA.

In game two, Goslee shut down the Transylvania offense, throwing a complete game two-hitter, striking out eight Pioneer hitters and allowing just one earned run.

Rose-Hulman gained a 3-0 advantage in the third inning on a single by sophomore Brittany Bernthold (Fisherville, Ky./Eastern) that drove in two Engineer runs.  The Engineers third run came on a single by Lutz that scored sophomore Kristin Green (Batavia, Ohio)

Rose-Hulman added three more runs in the top half of the fourth to take a 6-0 lead that would hold up until Transylvania scored their lone run in the bottom half of the seventh.

Senior Katie Yiznitsky (Hamilton, Ohio/Fairfield) was a perfect three-for-three at the plate in game two, scoring a run as well.

The pair of wins improved the Engineers to 10-2 on the season and 2-0 in HCAC play.  The Rose-Hulman softball team will return to action on Saturday, March 29, when they travel to Bluffton University.
