  Rose-Hulman News Rose-Hulman Softball Wins Two Extra Inning Games to Open '08

TUCSON, ARIZ. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology softball team opened the 2008 campaign with a pair of extra inning wins on Monday at the Tucson Classic.

In the opener, Rose-Hulman scored three times in the sixth inning to take a 4-2 lead over Briar Cliff, then added a run in the ninth to claim a 5-4 victory.

Senior Katie Frey (Cedar Grove/ Franklin County) led the Engineer offense with a double and a single.  Senior Ashley Montgomery (Plainfield) added a double for the offensive effort.

In the circle, sophomore Jordan Goslee (St. Joseph, Mich.) tossed all nine innings to pick up the victory.  Goslee allowed just two earned runs and tallied nine strikeouts in seven innings, before freshman Kyla Lutz (Tennyson/Boonville) pitched the final two shutout innings to earn the win.

In game two, Rose-Hulman scored twice in the eighth inning to capture a 7-6 victory over Ohio Northern University.  Sophomore Darcie Thomas (Brighton, Mich.) slapped four singles to pace the offensive effort, with sophomore Kristin Greer (Batavia, Ohio) adding a double, a single and one run.

Freshman C.J. Weist (Hazleton/Princeton) allowed just one run in 3 1/3 innings out of the bullpen to pick up her first career victory.  Weist allowed just one single and recorded two strikeouts in the victory.

Rose-Hulman improved to 2-0 on the season and squares off against Ohio Northern and John Carroll on Tuesday.
