Five Rose-Hulman Softball Players Earn Scholar Athlete Honors

Ashley Montgomery earned honorable mention all-league and academic Scholar All-American honors.

TERRE HAUTE, IND. - Five members of the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology softball team earned National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American Scholar Athlete honors for their efforts in the classroom and the diamond in 2006.

Juniors Katie Frey (Cedar Grove/Franklin County), Katie Maggard (Floyds Knobs/Floyd Central), Ashley Montgomery (Plainfield), Samantha Sheets (Milford, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) and Jessica Young (Winchester) were cited by the organization for maintaining a 3.50 grade point average while competing for the entire softball season for Rose-Hulman.

Frey batted .326 with a team-high 11 doubles and added three home runs as Rose-Hulman's starting shortstop last spring.  Maggard battled through injuries to finish 9-8 in the circle with a 3.02 earned run average and 16 complete games.

Montgomery received honorable mention all-conference accolades after batting .345 with nine doubles and 14 stolen bases.  Sheets tossed 38.2 innings with a 3-5 record in the circle, while Young had seven hits and one home run as an outfielder.

Rose-Hulman finished fourth in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament last spring and makes its debut in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference in 2007.
