Yaw Aning -- Arthur Ashe
Sports Scholar for 2006-07 |
TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of
Technology graduate Yaw Aning (Rochester, Minn./Century) has
been named a third-team men’s soccer Arthur Ashe All-Star Scholar by
the editors of Diverse Issues in Higher Education.
Aning was named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic
Conference Player of the Year for his efforts to cap a career that
included four all-conference honors. He captured three
first-team all-league awards during his career.
Aning led a Rose-Hulman defensive effort that
resulted in just 17 goals scored against the Engineers in 20 matches
during the 2006 season. The team finished 15-4-1 and second in the
HCAC regular season and conference tournament to established school
records for wins (15), fewest losses (4) and highest placement in
the conference.
Arthur Ashe All-Star Scholars nominees must have a cumulative grade
point average of 3.2; participate in intercollegiate athletics; be
active on their campuses and in their communities; and exemplify the
standards set by Ashe, who died in 1993. The program is
currently in its 15th year of honoring student-athletes at all
levels and divisions of intercollegiate athletics.
In addition to his success in the classroom and on the soccer field,
Aning served as a member of the National Society of Black Engineers
and the American Society of Civil Engineers prior to earning his
bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Rose-Hulman in May.
Aning is the second Rose-Hulman student-athlete to
receive the Arthur Ashe Award. Rashad Gold, a 2002 graduate,
earned first-team honors in men's basketball during his senior year.
The Arthur Ashe All-Star Scholars team consists of
12 first-team and 12 second-team honorees, along with 15 third-team
honorees from all levels of college soccer. Aning was the only
men's soccer player chosen to the squad from a college located in
Indiana.
