  Rose-Hulman News Rose-Hulman Sweeps HCAC Men's Soccer Major Awards;
Eight Engineers Named All-League
 

Rhys Evans -- 2008 HCAC Most Valuable Player

TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's soccer team swept the three major awards from the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference and eight players were named all-league in results released today.

Junior Rhys Evans (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Bluff) was named HCAC Player of the Year, Sean Helliwell was named league Coach of the Year, and Clint Vatterrodt (Bloomington, Ill./ University) earned Freshman of the Year accolades.

Rose-Hulman's effort included five first-team all-league selections.  Sophomore Corbin Clow (Martinsville), Evans, senior goalkeeper Isaac Heyveld (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap), junior John Hollingshead (St. Peter's, Mo./Lutheran) and senior Trevor Miller (Okemos, Mich.) claimed first-team accolades.

In addition, junior Cameron Hazel (Danville, Ill./Schlarman), sophomore Eric Myers (Indianapolis/Mount Vernon) and sophomore Joe Salisbury (Fort Wayne/Homestead) claimed second-team honors.

Evans ranked second in the league with 10 goals and 22 points to pace Rose-Hulman's 40-goal performance on offense this season.  The mechanical engineering major stands sixth in school history with 21 career goals and had a season highlight with all three goals in a 3-0 victory at Mount St. Joseph.

Evans became the third consecutive Rose-Hulman player to earn HCAC Player of the Year honors in men's soccer.  Yaw Aning earned the award in 2006, with Matt Trowbridge capturing the top award in 2007.

Helliwell led the Engineers to their first regular season conference title and the first NCAA Division III Tournament appearance in school history in his first year at the college.  The Engineers will debut in the NCAA Tournament with a Friday night match against Dominican University that will be broadcast on WMHD-FM 90.7 beginning at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

Vatterrodt ranked third on the Engineers with 16 points on six goals and four assists.  He had two goals in a victory over Bluffton and had three game-winning goals among his six scores.

The first team honorees also included Clow, Heyveld, Hollingshead and Miller.  Clow scored eight goals with 19 points to rank second on the Engineers in offense.  His efforts included two goals against Franklin and Finlandia, and a direct hand in both HCAC Tournament scores by the Engineers.  The mechanical engineering major scored the lone goal in the HCAC title match.

Heyveld holds single-season and career school records for goals against average.  The computer science major has a 0.66 goals against average and a record of 14-2-2 in net this season.  His school records also included eight shutouts and a 0.76 goals against average in his career.

Hollingshead was one of two Engineer to start all 21 matches this season.  The mechanical engineering major helped lead a defensive unit that allowed just 21 goals in 21 matches and will enter the NCAA Division III Tournament on a streak of five consecutive shutouts.

Miller is tied for the team lead with four assists and has tallied career totals of 15 goals, 14 assists and 44 points at Rose-Hulman.  He recorded two assists against Finlandia and has started 58 matches in his Fightin' Engineer career.

Hazel, Myers and Salisbury claimed second-team honors for Rose-Hulman.  Hazel started 18 games at defender to help key the team's efforts in the back, Myers had one goal and two assists with 18 starts at defender, and Salisbury scored one goal with four assists as a key member of the defensive midfield.

Rose-Hulman plays in a quad of four teams at the Loras Regional as part of the 58-team NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament this weekend.  Loras and Greenville will also square off on Friday, with the winners playing at 8 p.m. Eastern time on Saturday in a second-round contest.
