TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of
Technology clinched a bid to the upcoming Heartland Collegiate
Athletic Conference Tournament with a 3-2 victory over Franklin
College in men's soccer action on Tuesday night.
The Engineers improved to 11-6-1 overall and
5-1-1 in HCAC play with the victory. Rose-Hulman needs a
win at Hanover, plus one loss or tie by Manchester in the
Spartans last two games to earn a home game in the upcoming
league tourney.
Rose-Hulman jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when
senior Matt Trowbridge (Fort Collins, Colo./Poudre)
scored his 21st goal of the season on a penalty kick in the
seventh minute.
The Engineers increased the lead to two goals in
the 33rd minute on a score by freshman Corbin Clow
(Martinsville), courtesy of a crossing pass by Trowbridge.
Franklin closed to within a 2-1 deficit on a
score by Grant Krevda at the 61:28 mark. The Engineers
answered on a goal in the 75th minute, when junior Trevor
Miller (Okemos, Mich.) took a rebound from a defender and
scored from the top of the box. Sophomore Rhys Evans
(Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) was credited with the assist
on the initial shot.
Michael Harwood added another score for the
Grizzlies to move within 3-2 at the 80:46 mark. The
Grizzlies continued on the offensive in the final 10 minutes,
but the Engineer defense and goalie Trey Buck (Austin,
Texas/Ohio State) held off the charge for the win.
Buck tallied eight saves in the contest.
Rose-Hulman closes the regular season at Hanover
College on Saturday, while Franklin dropped to 4-10-2 and 2-4-1
in league play.
