GREENVILLE, ILL. -- The Rose-Hulman
Fightin’ Engineers men’s soccer squad earned a victory in their
first game of the 2007 campaign by defeating host Greenville
College 3-1 on Friday.
The Engineer’s got on the board first in the
25th minute, when senior Matt Trowbridge (Fort Collins, Colo., Poudre)
netted a penalty kick in the bottom left corner of the goal, following a
handball in the box by a Greenville defender.
Rose-Hulman then increased its lead to 2-0
when a perfectly placed free kick by junior Trevor Miller (Okemos, Mich.,
Okemos) found the top right corner of the net.
Greenville would answer with a goal off of a
penalty kick to trim the Engineer lead to 2-1 after the first half of play.
The lone goal of the second half came when
Trowbridge once again found the back of the net off of an assist by freshman
Mitch Buffington (O’Fallon, Ill., O’Fallon), the first of his college
career, that gave Rose-Hulman a 3-1 lead that would last the rest of the
contest.
Trowbridge moved into a tie for second place
on Rose-Hulman’s career scoring list with his 26th career goal with his second
score of the day.
Senior Trey Buck (Austin, Texas, Ohio
State Univ.) tallied two saves in the win, with the only goal scored against
him coming off of the Greenville penalty kick.
