Rose-Hulman HCAC Title Bid Falls Short in 3-0 Loss at Transylvania

Brad Hauter and the Engineers finished a memorable season with a 15-4-1 mark after a 3-0 loss at Transylvania.

LEXINGTON, KY. – Transylvania University snapped a scoreless tie with three goals in the final 18 minutes to defeat Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology 3-0 in the HCAC men's soccer championship game on Saturday.

Rose-Hulman completed the season with a school record 15-4-1 mark and finishes second in both the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season and tournament standings.

The Engineer season featured the most wins in school history (15), the fewest losses (4) and the best conference finish in Rose-Hulman men's soccer history (second).

The two teams battled to a scoreless draw for the first 72 minutes, with Transylvania holding a narrow advantage in shots.  The Pioneers eventually took a 1-0 lead at the 72:21 mark on a goal by Brad McLean on an assist by Ryan Wood.

Transylvania utilized goals from Jason Fairless and Andrew Zemanski in the 78th and 83rd minutes for the final margin of victory.

The two teams completed the match tied in shots at 7-7.  The Engineers also had five second half corner kicks as they attempted a late charge.

Senior David McIlwaine (Indianapolis/Pike) paced Rose-Hulman with four shots, while senior Trey Buck (Austin, Texas/Ohio State) added three saves in goal for the Engineers.

Transylvania earns a trip to the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament with its fourth consecutive league tournament title.  The Pioneers improved to 14-2-1 overall with the victory.
