Rose-Hulman Clinches HCAC
Tourney Home Game with 6-0 Victory at Franklin
FRANKLIN, IND. – Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology clinched a home game in this week's Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer tournament with a 6-0 shutout win at Franklin College on Sunday. With the win, Rose-Hulman continued to increase its school record for victories by improving to 14-3-1 on the season. The second-seeded Engineers will host No. 3 seed Hanover on Wednesday at Rose-Hulman, with the field and time to be announced. Junior Matt Trowbridge (Fort Collins, Colo./Poudre) led the offensive onslaught with two goals and a school record tying three assists in a seven-point effort. Trowbridge ranks second on the team with eight goals and leads the team with seven assists this season. The Engineers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute, when senior Eric Hoiland (Westminster, Colo./Northglenn) scored on a pass from Trowbridge. The lead increased to 2-0 in the 24th minute when Trowbridge tallied his first goal of the day on a pass from senior David McIlwaine (Indianapolis/Pike). Less than one minute later, freshman Phil Meyer (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) pushed the lead to 3-0 with a score at the 25:25 mark on a pass from Trowbridge. The first half scoring ended when McIlwaine booted home his team-high 13th goal on the third assist from Trowbridge at the 27:15 mark. The Trowbridge tallies continued just four minutes into the second half, when the junior booted home his second score of the day on the second assist from McIlwaine. Freshman Rhys Evans (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Bluff) rounded out the scoring with a goal in the 80th minute, on a pass from freshman Kyle Chmielewski (Shawnee Mission, Kan./Northwest). For the second day in a row, junior Trey Buck (Austin, Texas/Ohio State) and sophomore Isaac Heyveld (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap) combined on the shuout in goal. Buck recorded a pair of first half saves, while Heyveld played the final 45 minutes. The Wednesday home match with Hanover begins the four-team HCAC Tournament, with the winning squad earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tourney. Rose-Hulman hosts Hanover, while No. 1 seed Transylvania hosts No. 4 Defiance in semifinal action. |
