Rose-Hulman Sets New
School Record and Clinches Tourney Berth With Win Over Hanover
TERRE HAUTE, IND. – Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology set a new school record in season wins and clinched a berth in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament with a 4-0 win over Hanover College on Saturday afternoon at Jim Rendel Field. Freshman Phil Meyer scored the game winning goal on a pass from senior Kyle Thorp in the first half hour of the game. Seven minutes later, sophomore Trevor Miller added some insurance to the score with his fourth goal of the season on a pass from sophomore Brian Fulmer. Just 35 seconds before the end of the first half, senior Isaac Nolan scored a third goal for the Engineers, which was very fitting on a day which Rose-Hulman honored their seniors. At halftime, Rose-Hulman seniors Yaw Aning, Babcock, Chris Banner, Adam Flake, Eric Hoiland, David McIlwaine, Nolan, Kyle Thorp, Ray Throop, and Billy Whitehouse were honored for their contributions to a soccer program that rewritten the college's soccer history book. This class has a combined record of 41-30-2, by far the best mark in school history. In the sixty-fourth minute of the game, McIlwaine scored the final Engineer goal on another Fulmer assist to bring the final score to 4-0. Junior Trey Buck and sophomore Isaac Heyveld combined for the fifth Engineer shutout this year. The Engineers rose to a record 13-3-1 season mark and 5-2 in the HCAC while Hanover fell to a 8-7-3 season record and 5-2-1 in the HCAC. The Engineers return to action on Sunday at Franklin College at 1 p.m. Both the Engineers and the Panthers have clinched either the two or the three seed in the tournament, depending on the game on Sunday at Franklin College. A win or tie will set the Semi Finals match to be hosted at Rose-Hulman on Wednesday, where a loss will move the game to Hanover. |
