Rose-Hulman Men's Soccer Battles Through Downpour to Top DePauw 2-1

Box Score

Matt Trowbridge scored the first goal and assisted on the game winner in the historic Engineer victory.

TERRE HAUTE, IND. – Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology battled through a steady downpour to defeat DePauw University in men's soccer for the second time in school history, earning a 2-1 victory at the Engineer Intramural Field on Monday night.

Senior David McIlwaine (Indianapolis/Pike) scored the game winner with 1:21 remaining for his 27th career goal.  McIlwaine moved into third place on the all-time Engineer goals list with the tally, courtesy of passes from junior Matt Trowbridge (Fort Collins, Colo./Poudre) and freshman Phil Meyer (Mequon, Wis./Homestead).

Meyer opened the play with a half-field pass to Trowbridge, who then crossed the ball to McIlwaine for the game winning score.

Trowbridge opened the scoring with his sixth goal of the season at the 56:09 mark to give Rose-Hulman a 1-0 lead.  McIlwaine and senior Ray Throop (Statesville, N.C./ Math & Science) were credited with the assists.

DePauw tied the score at 1-1 at the 58:37 mark, when Adam Davis scored on a pass from Scott Noel.  The Tigers outshot the Engineers 18-7 in the match, with Rose-Hulman goalkeeper Isaac Heyveld (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap) recording six saves to earn the victory.

The win marked Rose-Hulman's second victory over DePauw in 28 attempts, dating to the series opener in 1980.  The Engineers previously won a 1-0 decision over DePauw in 1999.

Rose-Hulman improved to 11-3-1 on the season, while DePauw dropped to 8-5.  The Engineers travel to Bluffton University on Saturday in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action.
