Two Rose-Hulman Student-Athletes Named
HCAC Players of the Week

Sam Danesis improved to 7-0 on the season in both singles and doubles with a weekend sweep.

TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology freshman tennis player Sam Danesis (Akron, Ohio/Revere) and senior football defensive lineman Adam Helmerich (Huntingburg/Southridge) have been named Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Players of the Week in their respective sports, according to results released today by the conference office.

Danesis was named the Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the first time this season after her third consecutive perfect weekend of play.  She swept Julie Gehring of Mount St. Joseph 6-0, 6-0 and topped Jessica Hanson of Transylvania 6-1, 6-2 in singles play, while teaming up with Katy Zawadski for 8-1 and 8-2 doubles wins.

With the victories, Danesis improved to 7-0 in singles play and 7-0 in doubles play, with perfect 6-0 marks against HCAC competition.  The Engineers, who return home Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. vs. Marian, stand 6-1 overall and 5-1 in league play after finishing 1-8 last spring.

Adam Helmerich takes back a defensive touchdown vs. Concordia to earn Player of the Week honors.

Helmerich was named the Football Defensive Player of the Week after spearheading an effort that helped result in Rose-Hulman's first shutout since the 2002 season.

Helmerich returned an interception 39 yards for a touchdown to give Rose-Hulman a 35-0 lead as part of a 56-0 win over Concordia Chicago on Saturday.  The effort marked one of two touchdowns scored by the Engineer defense.

He added three tackles and one tackle-for-loss from the right defensive tackle position in the victory.

The football team improved to 2-1 on the season and returns to action on Saturday at North Park University.
