Rose-Hulman News Rose-Hulman Captures Two HCAC Player of the Week Honors

Brittany Bernthold -- HCAC Softball Player of the Week

TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology earned a pair of Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week honorees for last week's efforts.

Sophomore Brittany Bernthold (Fisherville, Ky./Eastern) has been named the league Softball Player of the Week, while sophomore Derek Eitel (Marshall, Ill.) claimed the Baseball Pitcher of the Week honor.

Bernthold batted .545 with 12 hits, six runs scored and four RBIs to help lead the Engineer softball team to a 5-1 mark and a 4-0 conference record last week.

Overall, Bernthold was 12-22 at the plate with one triple, a .545 on-base average and a team-high .636 slugging average.

Her efforts helped Rose-Hulman (24-10) sweep HCAC foes Mount St. Joseph and Hanover to earn hosting rights for this weekend's 2008 double elimination league tournament on Friday and Saturday.  The winner receives a bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Derek Eitel -- HCAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week

Eitel tossed 8 1/3 shutout innings over two appearances to lead the baseball team's unblemished record last week.

Eitel threw 6 2/3 scoreless innings in a road victory at Franklin and came on in relief for 1 2/3 scoreless innings in a victory over Hanover.

For the week, Eitel allowed seven hits, no runs and two walks with six strikeouts and a .226 opposition average.

Rose-Hulman stands 26-9 on the year and 13-4 in HCAC play.  The Engineers, who hold a one-game lead over Mount St. Joseph in the league standings, host Anderson University in a league matchup on Tuesday at 6.
